FIRST Robotics Competition
About FRC
“The varsity sport for the mind,” the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. FRC is the flagship program of FIRST. Under strict rules, limited resources, and all-too-short time limits, teams of up to 40 high school students are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
Students get to:
- Learn from professional engineers
- Build and compete with a robot of their own design
- Learn to use sophisticated software and hardware
- Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments
- Earn a place in the World Championship
- Qualify for over $11 million in college scholarships
The Challenge
The 2011 FRC competition is Logomotion™. The game will pit two alliances of three robots against each other on a 27' x 54' playing field. The goal of Logomotion is to hang inflatable plastic shapes (circles, triangles, and squares) on the scoring area to form the FIRST logo. As a special bonus challenge, teams will build minibots to race up vertical poles for extra points.
More information on Logomotion, including the official rulebook and videos, can be found on FIRST's site here.
